The 78th Infantry Division was formed on 25 May 1942 in the U.K and fought in the North
African campaign of late 1942 and early 1943. The division remained in North Africa until moving to Sicily on 23 July 1943. It began to arrive in Sicily from 25 July 1943 and was involved in the
Battle for Adrano between 29 July and 3 August 1943. The division left Sicily on 22 September
1943, and moved onto the Italian mainland where it served for the rest of the war..
