Portugal : M1904 Mauser-Vergueiro Bayonet with Scabbard.
This Portuguese bayonet was designed for use with the 6.5 mm M1904 Mauser-Vergueiro rifle
The Portuguese M1904 bayonets are believed to have been manufactured around the years 1904 - 1907 by Simson & Co. in Germany. It is thought that around 75,000 of these bayonets were completed before Portugal faced financial difficulties that prevented further production.
The bayonet is 405mm in length and when in its scabbard has an overall length of 430mm. The single-edged fullered blade is 280mm long. The serial number A969 is stamped on the pommel and the makers name is on the ricasso " Simson & Co Suhl", Two or three proof marks appear on the bayonet.. All metal parts including the steel scabbard are very deeply blued. Wooden grips are secured to the blade tang by screw bolts.
All finish intact, no damage of dents and it will be extremely difficult to find a better example of this scarce bayonet.
