The Special Service Battalion (SSB) was a South African military unit formed on 1 May 1933 under the patronage of the Minister of Defence, Oswald Pirow, Its purpose was to give training to youths, between the ages of 17 and 23, who, following the 1929 depression, could find no suitable employment on leaving school.
The unit served with distinction in WW2, particularly in the Italian campaign.
By 1953 the unit had been converted and transferred to other purposes.
