HMS Yarmouth was launched in 1959 as the first Royal Navy modified Type 12 frigate of the Rothesay class.
She was rammed and damaged in the Third Cod War by the Icelandic gunboat Baldur and had to withdraw from the patrol area for repairs.
During the Falklands War, HMS Yarmouth took part in the only encounter between armed ships of the war, when she along with HMS Brilliant shelled the Argentine coaster 'ARA Monsunen' In the final action of the war. HMS Yarmouth and HMS Endurance recaptured the South Sandwich Islands.
In 1987 she was sunk as a training target in the North Atlantic..
