France : M1892 First-pattern Mannlicher-Berthier Bayonet with Scabbard.
Introduced in 1892, this bayonet was still in use in World War I. The straight fullered single-edged blade has a characteristic indentation near the ricasso for the scabbard internal-springs to grip and the back of the blade near the point has a 155mm long groove. Nice blade with some minor staining towards the tip.
This first pattern has a muzzle-ring the same width as the quillon whereas the second pattern had a muzzle=ring which extended back over the grip. A third pattern had the curled quillon removed and many earlier examples were altered in this fashion so it is great to find an unaltered specimen like this. The quillon is stamped with the Châtellerault manufacturer's 'C' stamp and the serial number '78073'. The original composite grips are in nice undamaged condition. (wooden grips were ijntroduced c.1905). The fixing button and clip are in good working order.. Steel parts of the grip have darkened with age but no rust.
The blued-steel scabbard is in very good condition with the finish intact on the reverse whilst the front shows some finish wear.
Overall a very good example of this scarce early pattern bayonet.
