Imperial : German S98/05 aA Bayonet with Leather Scabbard and Frog.

First pattern S98/05 bayonet with the early long-eared quillon and no flash-guard. There is no rust at all although the steel has naturally darkened. Excellent smooth clean blade with the makers details 'Weyerberg Kirschbaum & Cie. Solingen' in four lines on the ricasso. The back of the blade includes the date stamp for 1915. Undamaged grips and working stud.
The scarce early black shiny leather scabbard has a metal chape bearing its original dark red/maroon painted finish. The top black metal scabbard fitting is tightly contained within the black leather frog and I have never been able to remove it. There is no shrinkage of the leather and the scabbard seam is firmly intact. The smooth black leather frog is stitched and riveted and reminds me very much of the frog used with a DRK hewer. There are no markings on the frog which, like the scabbard is in extremely good condition. This may have been some sort of walking-out sidearm. A really nice bayonet which
has been in my personal collection since August 1963 and was one of the first bayonets I ever obtained.
